White Robed Monks of St. Benedict
Peace Sisters and Brothers from around the world!
Please let us remember that life events are just that: life events.
It is raining here, snowing there, torrid heat there,
idyllic beach weather there,
floods and landslides there.
While within the same moment,
some are being born, others are dying,
some are laughing, others crying.
While within the same moment,
some are just thinking and others are without thought,
others are thinking of a past (depressed),
while others are thinking of a future (anxious),
and yet others are thinking / stressing in a present (worrying).
These experiences and an infinitude of other life events are happening within this moment.
All of these life events - vicissitudes - are taking place all around the world
simultaneously with beating hearts, expanding/contracting lungs
and other psychological functions.
Now.
Why take any of these life events personally?
Life is just life, is it not?
Life is not a personal event - unless we make it so.
Tsoknyi Rinpoche suggests:
Let yourself become the space witch welcomes any experience without judgment.
While Simone Weil reminds us:
Attachment is the great fabricator of illusions;
reality can be attained only by someone who is detached.
Which brings us to:
The Serenity Prayer
God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
and
Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi
(Prayer for Peace)
Lord,
make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Many blessings to you and yours.
Peace and Joy! :-)
