Chapter 16
Blinded their eyes, and hardend their heart
(John 12:40)
John 12:40:
He hath blinded their eyes, and
hardened their hart; that thay shall
not see with their eyes, nor
understand with their heart, and be
converted, and I should heal them.
God did not literally blind their eyes and harden
their hearts. This is an Eastern idiomatic way of saying that God permitted
them to be blinded and hardened. Thay were determined by their unbelief,
not by God overriding their freedom of will. This is confirmed by verse
37, "they believed not on him."
