Chapter 19
My peace I give unto you
(John 14:27)
John 14:27:
Peace I leave with you, my peace I
give unto you: not as the world
giveth, give I unto you.
In the East, the people will
salute each other on the street saying, "peace be unto you." They will
take the time to greet everyone in this manner. This is "as the world giveth."
It is done by touching the forehead, lips and hart meaning, "In my mind,
in my mouth, in my heart, I wish you peace."
Jesus said, "my peace I give unto you, not
as the world giveth." A man could say, "Shalhome, allecum, peace be with
you, but he did not have the peace inside himself to give. They make a
public show of it, yet they do not have peace.
In the immediate context Jesus has been teaching
them about the comforter that would abide with them when he departs unto
the father.
It is important to note that the word "peace"
is used as a figure of speech called a Synecdoche, which means to
exchange one idea for another associated idea. Here the word "peace" has
been exchanged for all heavenly and spiritual blessings that will be provided
by the comforter.
Ephesians 1:2-3:
Grace be to you and peace, from
God our Father, and from the Lord
Jesus Christ.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath
blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:
